Small shrimp, fish and other aquarium animals naturally look for quiet hiding places to reduce stress and avoid predators. Shrimp are especially vulnerable right after they shed their exoskeleton, and females carrying eggs often seek out dark, enclosed spaces to protect themselves and their eggs. Without a suitable refuge, it is common for stressed females to drop or abandon their eggs.
